ARTS COMMITTEE Chartered 1998 Revision Approved by Resident Council November 15, 2021
The Arts Committee supports a creative and engaging program in the arts that is responsive to the lives and needs of the ever-changing community at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads. The committee works closely with the Art Center Coordinator.
The Committee meets regularly to discuss how best to serve GHBC residents in a variety of creative arts and encourages residents to exercise their creative talents in the Art Center, a spacious, light-filled, centrally located space equipped with a library, art supplies, a pottery kiln, and various work areas for flower arranging, woodcarving, painting, drawing, and pottery. The Committee also discusses concerns and makes suggestions for the upkeep of this Art Center.
By encouraging the use of the Art Studio/Library, residents have opportunities for their own creative pursuits in addition to the well-attended classes in ceramics, drawing, watercolor, woodcarving, card making, and many others.
In addition, the Art Center Coordinator provides films and, on occasion, brings in outside artists for lectures and discussions to promote and stimulate interest in the Arts. The Art Center Coordinator, with the assistance of or suggestions from committee members, identifies and encourages residents with particular talents to share their skills by presenting talks and demonstrations on their artistic specialties, such as beadwork, photography, fiber arts, flower arranging, etc.
The Committee works closely with the Art Center Coordinator in planning field trips to local museums and other venues of artistic interest.
The Committee assists the Art Coordinator with the residents’ art show which typically is held once or twice a year. The Committee promotes these very popular art exhibits of work by residents as well as occasional exhibits by staff and guest artists in the Crossroads Gallery--a centrally located and attractive room with a flowing floor plan that invites visitors to linger and enjoy the creativity displayed on the walls.
Along with the Art Coordinator, the Committee periodically plans and executes an Art Open House to encourage interest in the arts.
