Community Service Committee Charter

The Community Service Committee of the Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads (GHBC) Resident Council, established in April 2009, promotes and implements outreach activities for the surrounding community and GHBC staff. It maintains liaison with the GHBC Administration through the Life Enrichment staff. It encourages broad resident participation in the ongoing Community Service Committee projects and welcomes suggestions for new projects by posting announcements of the committee's regularly scheduled monthly meetings and the meetings of the special project teams on the GHBC resident website and in the West Winds.
Committee Objective
- To evaluate opportunities for cooperation with various community organizations where there is a need.
- To plan actions or programs for service projects.
- To recognize and support individual and group community service activities.
Examples of Community Service Projects
- Every Friday, residents in Assisted Living and the Health Care Center are joined by Independent Living residents to work on special projects such as making net bags for the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) to fill with produce and assembling dental kits for community dental clinics.
- Through the “Knit for Kids” project, residents knit or crochet sweaters, blankets, hats, and scarves which are donated to World Vision.
- Assisting GHBC staff as they work to improve their English and/or prepare for their U.S. Citizenship Test.
- Mentoring GHBC high school and college interns by having weekly informal meetings with them.
- Assisting GHBC staff as they work to improve their English and/or prepare for their U.S. Citizenship Test.
- Collecting useable clothing to donate to the Clock Tower Thrift store, the Ronda Gilliam Clothing Bank, and the Our Lady Queen of Peace Church clothing program.
- Crocheting sleeping mats from plastic shopping bags for our homeless neighbors.
- Assisting the Culmore Clinic and the Dar AL-Hijrah Islamic Center Social Services as needed.
- Receiving cash donations to provide
- Thanksgiving dinner for Bailey’s Crossroads Shelter with the food [purchased by Dining Services] needed to prepare their residents’ Thanksgiving dinners and funds to support their hypothermia program.
- Organizing the annual Angel Tree project to raise funds for the Patrick Henry Family Shelter so parents can purchase holiday gifts for their children.
- Sponsoring special projects recommended by residents to meet new community needs.
