The following group activities are open to all residents. Residents may drop in for any session or call the contact person for more information. Click HERE for a chart of gatherings by day of the week.

On the News...

  • Perspectives on the News:
    Led by resident Arthur Smith, meets Wednesday afternoons, at 2:00 p.m. in the Smith Study. Contact:  Arthur Smith, ext. 7655 or Life Enrichment, ext. 7222.

Government & Advocacy...

  • The Lincoln Society Meets second Tuesday of every month at 4:30 p.m. Top of the West. Meeting followed by voluntary attendance at dinner in the JDR. Fellowship of residents with a Conservative political outlook. Frequently have a guest speaker. All welcome to attend. Contact: Bill Rockey, ext. 3153. 
  • The Silver Panthers Huddle A collaborative organization of Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads residents with a progressive outlook, the Huddle is an outgrowth of the Women’s March of January 21, 2017. We meet in the Board Room monthly on Monday's from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. but the date varies. Both men and women are welcome. Contact: Georgia Fuller, ext. 7578,
  • The Virginia Continuing Care Association (VaCCRA) promotes and protects the interests of CCRC residents. VaCCRA is a member of the National Continuing Care Residents Association (NaCCRA) and is the only statewide, resident-based organization that advocates for CCRC residents on the local, state and national levels.   • In-Depth Bible Study:
    This year the group is studying the Gospel of Luke, the Gospel with the birth narrative centered around Mary, the wonderful parables such as The Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son.   • St. Ignatius Group
    This group studies the Lectionary from the preceeding Sunday. Meets 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. in the Smith Study. Contact:  Jean Bacon, ext. 7458, 
  • Spiritual Companions:
    Spiritual and reflective discussions based on books read by the group. The book Listen to Your Life by Parker Palmer is currently being discussed. Meets every other Thursday at 3:30 in the Formal Parlor, beginning September 12. Contact: Bill Sykes, ext. 3148,

Exploring Creativity…

  • Encore Chorale:

    Encore Chorale is an organization for people 55 and older who like to sing. Encore rehearses September-December and January-May, culminating in free one-hour concerts. The music is varied, including classical, Broadway, spirituals, popular and traditional songs. There are no auditions, and singers don't have to read music -- although it certainly helps. GHBC's Chorale rehearses on Fridays from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. All residents are welcome to come and listen to rehearsals, to get an idea of what it's like. At the end of each season, the GHBC Chorale performs a special concert here at GHBC for residents only.  Residents and members of the GHBC Priority Club pay a reduced fee ($25/season) and register through GHBC.   • Goodwin House Players:
    Residents gather and take turns reading parts in popular plays. Meets every other Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Pointe Staff Conference Room. (Beginning Jan. 1, 2020, will meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.) Contact: Howard Smith, ext. 3160,
  • Knit for Kids:
    Knit for Kids meets every Tuesday afternoon in the Art Center at 1:30. The sweaters are shipped to World Vision, an international relief agency with programs in 96 countries around thee world. We are supported by a grant from the Goodwin House Foundation, Quality of Life Fund. Knitters and Crocheters are always welcome.   • Memoirs:
    Residents write life stories and meet to share their work by reading it aloud. Meets every Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Top of the West. Contact: Sharon Ewing, ext. 7538 or


  • Great Courses:
    Video-taped lecture series produced by The Teaching Company. Meets every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Media Room. Contact: Life Enrichment, ext. 7222.


  • Duplicate Bridge:
    Meets Monday and Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Card Room. Contact: Sondra Eisen, ext. 7487, 
  • Bridge:
    Meets Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Card Room. Contact: Life Enrichment, ext. 7222.
  • Mahjong:
    Meets Friday at 11:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Card Room.  Contact: Kitty Cacciapaglia, ext.7470.
  • Mexican Dominoes:
    Meets every Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the Game Room. Contact: Elaine Moore, ext. 7686,
  • Poker:
    Meets Tuesday and Friday at 7:00 p.m. in the Game Room. Contact: Al Goldberg, ext. 7365, or Frank Hart, ext. 7443,
  • Scrabble:
    Meets Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Game Room and Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in Top of the West.  Contact: Lois Czapiewski, ext. 7562,
  • Bingo:
    Meets every Wednesday evening at 7:00 in the Top of the West. Limited to 12 masked participants to maintain social distancing requirements. Bring your mask and $2 for the first card and $1 for each additional card. Reservations are not needed, but contact Otto Reinbacher at ext. 3111 or at for information. 

  • Croquet: Meets Saturday mornings from March through November in the front yard. Others can use sets which are kept in the Rotunda coat closet. ContactJohn Ewing, ext. 7538, or Toki Shimabukuro, ext. 7604,
  • Rummikub: Meets every Thursday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Game Room. This tile game is similar to the card game, rummy. Beginners are welcome. Contact Darlene Johnson, ext. 3152.


  • Book Discussion Group:
    Residents take turns leading the discussion of a book selected by group members. Copies of the book are available on loan from the Fairfax County Library. Meets at 10:30 a.m. the second Thursday of the month, in Top of the West. Contact: Helen Lane, ext. 7460, Click HERE for a list of books to be read this year.
  • Poetry Group:
    Residents meet to share original and/or favorite poetry. Meets the 2nd Thursday at 2:00 p.m. in the Smith Study. Contact: George Beshore, ext. 7550.
